We recommend that you bring your own firearms. You may import three rifles
of different caliber and one shotgun into Tanzania on a temporary basis. Tanzanian
customs and police departments both charge temporary import fees for the import of
firearms. Handguns, automatic and semi-automatic guns are prohibited.

Sighting in a .375 H&H
|
Most of your shooting will be done with a medium caliber rifle from .264 to .300
magnum. We encourage hunters to avoid using extremely high velocity rifles and in
most cases, the heavier grained bullets perform better on tough skinned animals.
Our favorite bullets are "Trophy Bonded" in solids and "Bear Claw"
in soft nose. The most popular scopes are vari-power from 1.5 to 4 (or 6). For all
dangerous game we use caliber's from .375 H&H magnum and upwards. Our most favored
calibers are .375 H&H magnum and .416 Rigby in bolt action. In double barrel
we prefer most of the heavy English caliber's such as the .375 H&H Flanged Magnum,
.450, .450 No. 2, .470, .475 No. 2, .500/.465 H&H, .500 Nitro Express 3"
etc.
African game is large and tough, and good penetration is essential for clean kills.
Ammunition should be loaded with bullets designed for large animals. If you are a
hand loader, consider such bullets as the Nosler, Hornady, Bitterroot, Speer "Grand
Slam", Barnes and the great Trophy Bonded Bullets. All clients will be asked
to check-fire their rifles upon arrival in the bush before shooting at game. Be certain
your medium rifle is sighted in at 200 yards, and the heavy rifles at 100 yards.
Licenses for dangerous game can only be issued if you are in possession of a firearm
of caliber .375 or larger. A minimum of .240 is required by Tanzanian law for all
other game. You should bring your own ammunition. You
are permitted to import 200 cartridges in each different caliber or gauge, which
is ample. We recommend a minimum of 60 rounds for each rifle if you are an experienced
marksman and plan to take an average quota of game. Include half soft-points and
half "solids" of the heaviest available bullet weight for your heavy rifle.
Tanzania Game Tracker Safaris maintains a limited stock of sporting rifles
and shotguns, which may be rented.
We arrange for import/export permits as required in Tanzania for firearms and
ammunition. Well in advance of your departure, our office must receive serial numbers,
caliber, and gun manufacturer's names as well as ammunition quantities. Also required
are your postal address, date of birth, nationality, passport number and home address.
Tanzania Game Tracker Safaris will obtain firearm permits when you supply our
office with the above details, which must be at least one month before your safari.
Airlines require that firearms and ammunition be checked. Firearms should be securely
cased and unloaded, with the ammunition in a separate container. You must advise
the commercial airlines that you are travelling with firearms and ammunition. Each
airline has strict restrictions as to weight and packing. Please check with the appropriate
airline as to their particular regulations at least 2 weeks before your departure.
Firearm Permits
Each hunting client may import three rifles and one shotgun. Permits cost $120
per gun and a 5% import duty is levied on all guns. You should expect to pay approximately
$40 to $50 per gun in import duties. Tanzania Game Tracker Safaris will pay
these fees in advance of your arrival and will bill you at the end of your safari.
